About Oakland Residents for Good Government

We’re Oakland Residents for Good Government, and we’re asking our neighbors to vote NO on Measure EE.

Why we’re opposing the measure

Oakland’s charter needs work. We support reform because the current system has problems that need to be addressed. We believe Measure EE would make some of those problems harder to solve by concentrating more authority in the mayor’s office without sufficient checks on how it is used.

Our concerns are about department-head appointments, public questioning of the chief executive, and the influence district representatives would have when they disagree with the mayor. Those are decisions about how Oakland will be governed for years to come.

The rules would apply to future mayors

Barbara Lee is the mayor today, but the charter provisions would also apply to the people elected after her. We think Oakland needs rules that support capable leadership and protect the public when an officeholder misuses power. That is how we’re assessing this proposal.
